As part of efforts to ensure a trouble-free counting of votes on May 13, the Election Commission has deployed an observer for each assembly constituency in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, where stakes are high for rival political parties.
The EC has put in place 294 observers in West Bengal and 234 in Tamil Nadu, equal to the strength of the Assembly, in order to ensure a smooth counting process in these States.
The Commission also deployed 18 additional observers in West Bengal, which is witnessing a keen tussle between CPI(M) and Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress.
The Commission has already said that Central security forces would remain for “quite a number of days” in West Bengal even after results are out on May 13 to ensure peace.
The EC has deployed 81 observers for the counting process for the 140-member Kerala Assembly, 80 for the 126-member Assam Assembly and 12 for the 30-member Puducherry Assembly
