DMK fears losing power, says Jayalalithaa

Fear of losing power has forced the DMK leader M. Karunanidhi to seek mandate by projecting the Tamil race as reeling on the throes of crisis, AIADMK leader Jayalalithaa said on Monday.
Mr. Karunanidhi was well-versed “not only in corruption” but also in deceiving people. People should dislodge him before he wreaks havoc on the entire State. “Will you all do it?” she asked the huge crowd of supporters and evoked a roaring response.
Ms. Jayalalithaa at the outset likened the turnout of people disliking family rule in the State to the uprising by Egyptians to abolish dictatorship.
She charged Mr. Karunanidhi with betraying Tamils by enabling Sri Lanka to retain Katchatheevu on a platter, ignoring the sufferings of lakhs of Tamils in the island nation, and “shamelessly” letting people of Tamil Nadu down on the Cauvery river water issue with Karnataka despite being a part of the Central Government.
The AIADMK leader felt that Mr. Karunanidhi was not sincere about getting the State's share since his family's business interest in Karnataka would be affected.
The DMK, she said, has caused disgrace to Tamil Nadu on the 2G spectrum issue, destroyed the Indian economy and undermined its security.
The former Chief Minister sought to know the cause for the mysterious death of the contractor of the Veeranam project Satyanarayana Reddy when the DMK was in power from 1971 to 1976. Also confounding were the deaths of DGP Durai when the DMK was in power from 1989 to 91, contractor Ramesh in connection with the corruption in over bridges construction when the DMK held power from 1996 to 2001, and the recent death of Sadiq Batcha, aide of former Minister A. Raja. Ordinary people end up getting victimised due to corruption indulged in by the DMK, she said.
Ms. Jayalalithaa exhorted people to safeguard democracy in Tamil Nadu by coming out and voting in large numbers. For the voters in Gandarvakottai constituency, she promised to include the region in the scheme to divert water from the Coleroon, and a new bus stand if voted to power. A cashew processing centre, a government college and a government polytechnic were among her other promises.
Similarly the local requirements in the other constituencies in Pudukottai district will also be fulfilled, she said.
Ms. Jayalalithaa also listed the promises in the AIADMK manifesto, soliciting votes for her party contestants from Gandharvakottai, Alangudi, Viralimalai, Aranthangi and Tirumayam constituencies and the CPI candidate contesting from the Pudukottai Assembly segment.
