Tamil Nadu crisis: Cong buys time to save DMK-Cong alliance

In an indication of a possible patch-up, the DMK ministers have decided not to quit the Union Cabinet.

The move comes amid hectic parleys from both the Congress and the DMK to save the seven-year-old alliance.

"Congress leader Pranab Mukherjee has sought a day's time to sort out the issues," said MK Stalin, Deputy Chief Minister, Tamil Nadu.

Earlier on Sunday, the Dravidian party had decided to part ways with the UPA after talks over seat-sharing for the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections failed.

The main trouble shooter of the Congress, Pranab Mukherjee, had met party chief Sonia Gandhi to fine-tune the response to the DMK.

Meanwhile, Maran held a meeting with Mukherjee and Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad. Later, Maran also met Alagiri.

The DMK chief M. Karunanidhi had earlier expressed the hope that the crisis over seat-sharing for the Tamil Nadu elections would be resolved by Monday. But sources said the party was exploring tie-ups with other parties too.
