சென்னை:அமைந்தகரை பச்சையப்பன் கல்லூரி மாணவர்கள், "பஸ் டே' என்ற பெயரில், பெரும் ரகளையில் ஈடுபட்டனர். அவர்களை கட்டுப்படுத்த தடியடி நடத்திய போலீசார் மீது, பீர் பாட்டில், கற்கள், செருப்புகளை வீசி பதில் தாக்குதல் நடத்தினர். இதில், துணை கமிஷனர் உட்பட, 15 போலீசார் மற்றும் ஐந்துக்கும் மேற்பட்ட மாணவர்கள் படுகாயமடைந்தனர்.சென்னை அமைந்தகரை பச்சையப்பன் கல்லூரி மாணவர்கள், பாரிமுனையில் இருந்து எம்.எம்.டி.ஏ., காலனி செல்லும் இரண்டு மாநகர பஸ்களை (தடம் எண்:15 டி) வேப்பேரியில் நேற்று காலை மடக்கினர்.மாலை மற்றும் டிஜிட்டல் பேனர்களை பஸ்சின் முகப்பில் கட்டி, பஸ்சின் உட்புறம் மட்டுமின்றி, மேற்கூரையில் அமர்ந்து பயணித்தனர். குடிபோதையில் இருந்த சில மாணவர்கள், கையில் வைத்திருந்த தண்ணீர் பாக்கெட்டுகள், சிறிய கற்கள், காகித ராக்கெட்டுகளை சாலையில் சென்ற இருசக்கர வாகன ஓட்டிகள், பாதசாரிகள் மீது வீசியபடி சென்றனர்.உயர் அதிகாரிகளிடம் இருந்து உருப்படியான உத்தரவு வராததால், அதை வேடிக்கை பார்த்தபடியே, "பஸ் டே' கொண்டாட்டத்திற்கு போலீசார் பாதுகாப்பு வழங்கினர். பச்சையப்பன் கல்லூரி வளாகத்தை, மதியம் 1.20 மணியளவில் பஸ்கள் நெருங்கியது.அப்போது, பஸ்சில் கழற்றிய மாலையை பாதுகாப்பு பணியில் இருந்த கீழ்பாக்கம் போலீஸ் துணை கமிஷனர் லட்சுமி மீது வீசினர். பின் கற்களை கொண்டு போலீசார் மீதும் தாக்குதல் நடத்தினர். இதனால், ஆவேசமடைந்த போலீசார், உயர் அதிகாரிகளை தொடர்பு கொண்டு அவர்கள் உத்தரவுப்படி, வன்முறையில் ஈடுபட்ட மாணவர்கள் மீது தடியடி நடத்தினர்.கல்லூரி வளாகத்திற்குள் சிதறி ஓடிய மாணவர்கள், உள்ளே தயாராக வைத்திருந்த பீர் பாட்டில், பழைய செருப்பு, கற்கள், டியூப் லைட்கள் மூலம், போலீசார் மீது பதில் தாக்குதல் நடத்தினர். இதில், கீழ்பாக்கம் துணை கமிஷனர் லட்சுமிக்கு முதுகு, உதவி கமிஷனர் விஜயராகவனுக்கு காது, இன்ஸ்பெக்டர் ராஜேஷ்வரிக்கு கால் மற்றும் தலை, டி.பி., சத்திரம் இன்ஸ்பெக்டர் ரவிக்குமாருக்கு இடது தொடை மற்றும் வயிற்றிலும் காயம் ஏற்பட்டு ரத்தம் வழிந்தது.இதேபோல, எஸ்.ஐ.,க்கள் உள்ளிட்ட, 10 போலீசாருக்கும் காயம் ஏற்பட்டது. போலீசார் தடியடி நடத்தியதில், ஐந்துக்கும் மேற்பட்ட மாணவர்களும் காயம் அடைந்தனர். இச்சம்பவம் தொடர்பாக, 10க்கும் மேற்பட்ட மாணவர்களை, கீழ்பாக்கம் போலீசார் விசாரணைக்காக தேடி வருகின்றனர்.

That hijacked feeling: City wants to end bus day chaos

CHENNAI: All good things have to come to an end. And the city feels the Bus Day activity has to end not because it started as a good gesture, but because of the ugly, often violent, turns it has taken over the last few years.

Two days after the Madras high court asked the city police why it could not put an end to the practice, the police tried to stop Bus Day by Pachaiyappa's College students on Wednesday. The students pelted stones at the police, injuring 30 of them and five others on the road. "This has become a law and order problem," says Manoj Radhakrishnan, a quality consultant who was held up in traffic jams caused by several Bus Days.

Bus Day, which started as a custom to honour bus drivers at the end of the academic year, is now a virtual hijacking of buses by a bunch of college students who sing, dance, holler and hold the city traffic to ransom. The public, the police and the Metropolitan Transport Corporation appear to have come to a consensus that enough is enough.

T Sekar, an assistant professor at Pachaiyappa's College, says it started about 25 years ago. "Students who travelled by the Broadway bus wanted to thank the driver at the end of the year. They garlanded the bus and the driver and took out a procession," he says. Years down the line, the procession acquired a menacing tone, with some of the spirited' students causing damages to the bus as also some other vehicles on the road. Soon, MTC drivers became captives and road users at the mercy of Bus Day revellers. The police were reduced to escorts.

Perhaps not any longer. "We are not going to let this go," says city police commissioner T Rajendran. "Severe action will be taken against those who pelted stones at the police and passersby." The ironical turn the revelry took over the years has put MTC in a spot. "Earlier students used to hire MTC buses for the day which was to honour drivers. Now it causes damage to MTC and others on the road. This has to stop," says MTC managing director V Babu.

B Mani, a student of Pachaiyappa's College has a counter: "There is no cultural activity in our college and this is our only celebration. Yes, it causes traffic jams, but so do ministers' convoys."

'Bus Day' celebration turns violent

At least 30 police personnel, including an Assistant Commissioner of Police, and ten others were injured when a ‘Bus Day' celebration turned violent in front of the Pachaiyappa's College here on Wednesday, police said.

According to police sources, about 100 students took a Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) bus from Broadway to their college as part of their ‘Bus Day' celebration around noon on Wednesday. A large posse of police personnel escorted them. On reaching the college premises, the students allegedly threw stones. Traffic was disrupted on EVR Salai following the incident.

“We exercised restraint and persuaded the students to disperse. They continued to throw stones indiscriminately…Six members of the public were also injured. Police used mild force to chase the unruly students into the campus,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Kilpauk) S. Lakshmi said.

The injured police personnel were admitted to the Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital.

Four students were also hospitalised. “Police entered the campus without obtaining the permission of the management,” a professor of Pachaiyappa's College said.

The incident took place a couple of days after the Madras High Court wanted to know why police were not taking action against unruly celebrations in the name of ‘Bus Day'. Explaining why police used force, Commissioner of Police T. Rajendran said the students kept on throwing stones on the police and public. “Public life and property was endangered. The Inspector of Police (Kilpauk) E. Rajeswari suffered a head injury…we had no other option but to chase the students. One MTC bus and two motorcycles were damaged in stone throwing,” he told The Hindu.

The Kilpauk police have registered a case against unnamed students under various provisions of the IPC, including attempt to murder, and the Public Property (Prevention of Damage and Loss) Act, police sources added.
