Tiruvarur town police have registered a case against film actor Vadivelu for his "denigrating speech" against founder of Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) Vijayakant here on March 23.
P. Moorthy, Superintendent of Police, said that the case was registered by Selvam, Inspector of Tiruvarur Town Police station, on Saturday night.
Cases have been registered against Mr. Vadivelu under sections 153 (A) for spreading hatred among groups, 171(G) giving false propaganda and section 505 part two for making denigratory speech.
The cases have been registered following a complaint lodged with the Chief Electoral Officer of Tamil Nadu by Dileep Kumar, High power committee member of DMDK, Chennai. In his complaint Mr. Kumar said that Mr. Vadivelu had made a denigrating speech against Mr. Vijayakant which is not permitted under law at the public meeting held at Tiruvarur on March 23 for launching the campaign for the Democratic Progressive Alliance led by DMK. Moreover the speech was telecast by a couple of TV channels repeatedly.
Mr. Kumar appealed to the Chief Electoral Officer to issue orders to stop the telecast and take action against Mr. Vadivelu by registering cases. Mr. Vadivelu should be barred from making such derogatory speeches against Vijayakant in future, he said in the complaint.
The Chief Electoral Officer forwarded the complaint to Tiruvarur Collector K. Baskaran who in turn asked the Superintendent of police to take action.
