DMK ministers to submit their resignations to PM today

New Delhi: The seven-year-old alliance between the Congress and the DMK is on the rocks. DMK's Union ministers - Alagiri, Napolean and Dayanidhi Maran - are on their way to Delhi to submit their resignation to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. This comes after the DMK decided to pull out of the UPA Cabinet on Saturday, withdrawing its six Cabinet ministers, alleging the Congress's stand in seat-sharing demanding more seats made it difficult for it to continue in the alliance. "We are going to Delhi to meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and we will submit the resignation at 11 am. We will not accept anything that will hurt our self-respect," DMK leader Napolean said in Chennai on Monday.

The DMK has decided to pull out its ministers from the UPA government at the Centre saying it will only give issue-based support. At a late night meet with reporters on Sunday, party chief M Karunanidhi said the Congress demand for 63 seats over the agreed number of 60 was one of the reasons for the DMK's decision. He also said that more parties are likely to join the DMK-led alliance.

"No one from the Congress has approached us so far... a few parties are likely to join our alliance. It would be clear in a few days... Congress' demand for more seats is one of the reasons for our exit," Karunanidhi said. (Watch: More parties likely to join us, says Karunanidhi)
